Meet Valerie Monckton

Writer

I’ve loved animals and writing since I was a child, but it took me until adulthood to realize that I could combine these passions. I have an MSc in Animal Biosciences from the University of Guelph and six years of experience working as a researcher, writer, and editor in animal advocacy. As a researcher, I worked for the Aquatic Life Institute, Animal Equality, Food Solutions Action, the Humane Society of the United States, Humane Canada, and Ethical Seafood Research. My work explored many topics, including aquatic animal welfare, farmed land animal welfare, intersections between animal and human welfare, and the impact of alternative proteins on global and environmental health.

This extensive research experience informs my writing, where I strive to craft nuanced, compassionate narratives about the struggles of both humans and nonhuman animals. I believe that the best stories confront uncomfortable truths, and that emotional storytelling is necessary to translate research into action.

Editor

Editing may be less flashy than writing, but my researcher’s eye for detail and my love of language have drawn me to editing academic papers, reports, and award applications since 2020. Besides this experience, I am a member of the American Copy Editors Society (ACES) and have a certificate in fact-checking from the International Fact-Checking Network.

Having worked in the nonprofit sector, I understand how language choice can affect vulnerable groups, and will ensure that your work reflects your values. As an animal welfare specialist, I am adept at tailoring language to its audience when describing animals and their experiences.

My love of language and the life sciences will help you distill complex concepts into concise, clear, and accessible content. As a writer myself, I understand that editing can be emotionally difficult, just like any other learning experience. I prioritize giving positive feedback as much as constructive feedback to make sure that you know where you excel and what needs work. Writing is a journey, and I want to make the road as smooth as possible for you.

“We write because we have passion. Passion for our research, for our cause, or for the stories we want to share. Yet, many of us struggle to find the right words or shape the right narratives. You don’t have to do this alone. My experience and love of words can help you rediscover the passion that drove you to write.”
